Art Deco Fashion Designs

This edition focuses on the works of three artists who contributed to the Gazette du bon ton, the source of the prints for this issue.

► George Barbier (1882 to 1932)
According to Encyclopædia Universalis and Larousse, Barbier was a fashion and book illustrator. He was born in Nantes in 1882 and was educated at l’École des beaux-arts de Paris, a student of Jean-Paul Laurens. Some of his works include illustrations for la Gazette du bon ton, Modes et manières d’aujourd’hui, Fêtes galantes, and le Roman de la momie. His first exhibition was in 1911. He created many costumes and decor for the Folies-Bergère.

► Pierre Brissaud (1885 to 1964)
According to Qui êtes-vous? Brissaud was an illustrator who was born in Paris on December 23, 1885. He was educated at l’École alsacienne and was a member of the Société nationale des Beaux-Arts. According to a book by Jacques Poirier, his family included many famous artists such as Maurice and Bernard Boutet de Monvel, Jacques Brissaud as well as a famous physician, Édouard Brissaud, who is said to have dressed and behaved more like an artist than a doctor.

► André Édouard Marty (1882 to 1974)
According to Les Arts Décoratifs, Marty was an illustrator who was educated at l’École des beaux-arts, a student of Cormon. He formed friendships with Lepape, Martin and Brissaud. He provided illustrations for Fémina, Comoedia illustré, la Gazette du bon ton, le Sourire, Vogue, l’illustration des modes, Harper’s Bazaar and for works by Shakespeare, La Fontaine, Musset, Daudet, P. Louÿs, and Maeterlinck.
